A distanza di 21 anni dall’uscita della prima Barbie (1959) escono contemporaneamente la Hispanic Barbie e la Black Barbie , ovvero le versioni ufficiali di Barbie a rappresentare rispettivamente la comunità ispanica e la popolazione afroamericana . Come per la Hispanic Barbie, anche per la Black Barbie viene scelto il volto di Steffie . La storia è curiosa, perché in America Barbie aveva avuto due amiche afroamericane, Cara e Christie. L’amica Cara, che aveva il volto di Steffie, sparì dopo alcuni modelli, e Steffie andò a sostituire il volto originale di Christie col proprio. Ma queste erano, appunto, amiche. Solo nel 1980 Steffie impersona finalmente la Barbie afroamericana.
